Using VPS and third parties to the max!

So you can do something like this:

server

This is the memory usage for all of CESB’s site. I was able to reduce the memory consumption by almost half. How? By using Google Apps. Using Google apps for corporate email, I have the power to completely shut down the entire server’s email functions. POP service, SMTP service, IMAP service, webmails, spam scanner also email logging. For big sites, application optimised server is a must. A  server to handle the site, another to handle the mysql database, also a separate nameserver or dns server (to ease scaling), and another to handle the emails and stuff.

Why have 4 separate servers when we get them all with a normal hosting environment? The answer is simple. So you can scale, or for fail-safe measure. For most company, the most important part of the internet activity might be your email system. Some send invoices, some send receipt, or order confirmation. It is very crucial to have those email to be sent or received promptly. Imagine what happen if your ‘web’server needs an upgrade, under maintenence, or under attack? Will you still receive your emails?

What about nameserver? Nameserver is used to tell your user’s browser that http://your.domain leads to 222.212.222.212 or whatever IP address your webserver is. So whats wrong with having ‘em on the same box as your webserver? Well this have something to do with scalability.  Let say… your site is super famous! The whole world access it everyday, up to a point that even the best server box out there won’t be able to manage(imagine google or yahoo). Here’s whe the dns server comes into action. Nameserver can reroute user to a different server(ip address) based on server’s load, country of user, or just on a whim(round robin). This means you can have 10 or more webserver working together on a single site. Maintenance can be done without even affecting the user experience.

Separating database server and webserver is just plain logic. Your database can supply data to not just 1 webserver, but to the 10 or more webserver you prepared. Heck, you can even use multiple database server to make sure that your business. Is always on line!

Servers aren’t cheap. You can spend thousands per month just for a single server. That’s how things are. Yet with the whole VPS phenomenon going on, you could have the power of multiple servers with just a few hundreds bucks per month. Knowing what services used a lot of resources help. You can get a VPS as cheap as 10USD per month. That’s 40USD for the whole setup. Wait, we also could use third parties to further lower our cost! Google apps for email, and third party dns server(some are free). So you actually can save your 2 vps. You can go on and go with 2 VPS(1 database, 1 web), or stick with 4,  (3 web, 1 db or 2 db, 2 web). And sooo.. with 40USD, you get yourself a setup that”ll beat any 40USD webhosting package out there.
